3 Anime I Regretted To Watch, 1 Good One I Cannot Watch and Random Thoughts on the Summer Season

.
Summer ’08 on paper is actually a really crappy season. No big title actually highlighted the season that everyone in their respective genres couldn’t wait for like Spring’s Code Geass, Vampire Knight and Itazura na Kiss. If you would look at everyone’s Summer Season Picks, it’s filled with a lot of “maybes”. Here are three titles that I watched and felt that they don’t deserve their own entries:

Birdy The Mighty Decode *What else was I supposed to expect with a title like this?

What… the… hell was that? Ugly alien fugitives running amok with alien police running after them on Earth and it just so happened that a young boy was in the area and became involved. Nothing new, but considering that the title is a decade or so old, it may have been revolutiona- No! I don’t like the art, the character designs are blegh, the music is like something from a bad 70s police drama-comedy, I don’t find anything appealing about the storyline. What a waste of 24 minutes and 9 seconds of my life. On instinct, I didn’t want to watch this already because the title is… well, crap. But as a general rule, I never judge a book by it’s cover, I should listen to my instincts more. But it was quite a hit when OVAs were released back in the 90s. But considering that the anime series failed to pique my interest, I don’t really want to bother anymore.

Strike Witches 01 * Lolis with no pants

Apparently in 1939, aliens came and started blowing up things for no apparent reason, which brought about the scarcity of pants and skirts for women. In order to save the world from their panty-wearing existence, scientists invented The Striker Unit using magic (HAH???) and they gathered lolis witches from all over the world to work the magic and fight the aliens. The people who are fighting people them aliens are picking up candidates and one special girl (there’s always one) who was being recruited into their line of work. Again… what the hell was that??? Is GONZO that desperate for a hit that they are exploiting the loli pantyshot moe subculture that much??? I mean, I’m not a whiny feminist who has anything against fanservice. Nowadays, in order to be an anime viewer, you will have to have a calm acceptance of things like this. I mean, having them once in a while is fine (and more often than not, funny) unless the genre is really ecchi. Actually, even if you are into loli pantyshots, the novelty of it wears out after the first 2 minutes – unless you’re a pedobear. It’s such a shame though, the concept looked interesting if they wrote it good enough. But WTF!?!?

Sekirei * Screw this... Next!

OK, I admit. I really have a prejudice against this show. I saw the promo and just thought, “The hell is this crap?” In fact, I told people I wasn't gonna watch this (though with the way things are going, I’ll probably just settle for Antique Bakery and World Destruction), I watched it anyway and just thought, “The hell is this shit?” Seriously, after being so pissed off by watching Birdy and Strike Witches, I couldn’t even get myself to finish this anymore and just deleted it.

What a waste of an hour. It would seem that a lot of anime released this season are ecchi versions of Aa! Megami-Sama – loser guy ending up with a powerful woman who has huge knockers and little common sense to put on a bra (Not that I didn’t think Belldandy didn’t have common sense, but her naïveté was more because of innocence than actual lack of common sense).

The only title that I like among the four things I watched but couldn’t watch because if I watched it, it would be under-appreciated if I didn’t watch the previous seasons first would be Slayers.

Slayers Revolution 01 ~Amazing~

I knew that this is a sequel of sorts from a 90s anime. I never saw that though – stupid network television scheduling shows in a time not conducive to high schoolers -_-* But I watched the first episode of the current season anyway. I actually found it funny. But I find myself appreciating the scenarios, dialogue and everything else because considering that it was a 90s anime, they tried not to upgrade much on the anime style to give it the same feel as when you watch 90s anime. Anyway, I feel compelled to search out the previous seasons of this anime before watching this.

Not sure if I want to give Birdy a shot now... Well, we'll see.
Have only watched a couple of episodes of the original Slayers, and though that it was pretty entertaining 'for its time'. Wonder if it'll be okay to just dive into Revolution right now.

I would definitely recommend trying out the previous 3 seasons of Slayers. They're all awesome. They were done when Megumi Hayashibara was in the prime of her career.

I love slayers, is good to have these characters back. Is like seeing an old friend... or maybe I am just nostalgic...

...and as for Birdy... God Lord am I really that old if i remember these two old series...?

@issa-sa: i really didn't like birdy because the story is unappealing to me. top it off with bad animation (and i have low standards)... no.

when i watched slayers revolution, i felt like i didn't need to watch the previous seasons but i thought that if i watched this without seeing the previous seasons, it will come out under-appreciated

@l-chan & evildevil: a lot of people who remember watching this before are raving about it. now i feel compelled to seek out the previous seasons.

@evildevil: i actually never heard of birdy til now, but i couldn't appreciate it. if you're old, i'm a dinosaur.

Wow, I actually enjoyed watching all of them. Well some more so than others, but on the whole they were quite decent. Knowing me, I'm all for Strike Witches (*´Д`)ハァハァ

Haha, you know, I haven't checked out any of the shows you reviewed, but I heard good comments on Birdy the Mighty Decode. I already download Strike Witches, so I might as well see how that goes too XD

i really didn't like birdy's art. topping it with a storyline that i didn't like that much, it really pissed me off. but yeah... i'm considering re-watching it because everyone seem to like it. i think i missed something... maybe.

i like strike witches. the story is interesting, but i got really irritated with the lolis running around in panties. for some reason, i found it highlighted more than the story...
